About: House of the Rising Sons PR, The PR Person and Slap!Media
Multimedia. For most of us, that word means an electronic, digital audio-visual method of communicating. For Isidra Person-Lynn, that term sums up her 18-year career in print, radio, photography (still and video) and the worldwide web.
An avid writer, Isidra studied English at Union College in Schenectady, New York and received her Master of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Southern California in 1979.
She edited corporate newsletters and webletters, and directed the entire production, from writing to printing.
In 1984 she happened upon radio at Pacifica’s KPFK. There she learned radio editing and production. She later produced and hosted “Talking Book” an hour-long variety children’s radio show.
In 1986 she was hired as Public Affairs director for KACE FM, an urban radio station based in Los Angeles, but licensed to Inglewood, CA. From studios in Watts, the Inglewood City Hall and the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall, she voiced the evening news and hosted a talk show on Sundays titled "Sunday Morning Live" for nine years.
Known for painting vivid word pictures with her cutting edge interviews, Isidra’s landscape was Los Angeles which went through quite a number of major stories during her tenure: the 1992 Rodney King verdicts, the 1994 earthquake, the 1995 OJ Trial. Then there were the developing stories including the freeing of South Africa's Nelson Mandela, gang violence, state-rescued school districts, the AIDS/HIV epidemic and "driving while black." She has interviewed top elected officials, entertainers and other well-known personalities and many movers and Lakers from the headlines. (Yes, she loves sports!)
In 1995, Cox Media took over KACE and moved the urban station in with the admittedly right-wing KFI and the general market formatted KOST. For a year, Isidra operated from her news desk in the general newsroom, which had desks from all three stations. She often teamed up with the reporters from KFI to scoop stories from its competitors.
In 1996, Isidra founded her public relations company, House of the Rising Sons PR, which she named after her five growing sons. Her clients include (and have included) T.H.E. Clinic, Inc., the Los Angeles Black Business Expo and Trade Show, California Black Health Network, the former WATTSHealth Systems, which operated Family Savings Bank (now OneUnited Bank, UHP Healthcare, and WATTSHealth Foundation. In other associations, she coordinated special events for author Terry McMillan, publisher Earl Graves, The Ahmanson Theater and its hit play “Bringin’ Da Noise Bringing Da Funk” and more.
Those companies held frequent press conferences, corporate dinners and breakfasts, which required celebrity and honoree videos, and publicity for these events. Corporate events included: Third World Arts Festival, WATTS Towers Center Day of the Drum, Women and Children’s Baby Fair, and various multicultural events including Festival of Choirs, Black History Month, Asian Pacific and Cinco de Mayo.
To promote these events, Isidra prepared PSA's, purchased commercial time on radio, cable and TV and also wrote and directed all commercials --TV and radio. She often designed ads, and has developed a creative and consistent team of graphic designers, photographers, videographers, writers, editors, and audio engineers. She has had hands-on experiences with a variety of mediums, and has overseen the design and placement of billboards, pole banners, flyers, posters, electronic marquis, and even corporate sponsored books, newsletters, brochures and souvenir journals.
As the Internet developed, Isidra stayed on the cutting edge and became the coordinator of the following websites: uhphealthcare.com, wattshealthsystems.com, wattshealthfoundation.com, family savingsbank.com, blackbusinessexpo.com, and wattshealthcharities.com.
As a web coordinator, Isidra was responsible for getting photos and print copy and working with the website designer to plan technologically advanced but effective and user-friendly websites. More effectively, she has developed a number of active email groups, which are used to communicate on behalf of her clients.
During her tenure, Isidra taught many interns and professionals about radio interviewing, hosting and production. Whatever field she delved into, Isidra always sought out interns to work with her. She never loaded them up on grunt work, but chose instead to view them as cub reporters that she taught the basics of writing, how to use the studio and equipment, as well as the techniques of interviewing and speaking. She took them with her on location, from the corners of the mean streets where she interviewed hardened criminals to the high–end press conferences chock full of stars, with many events in between. More than a few have caught the fever and have gone on to excel in TV, radio and print.
At the end of the day, Isidra is most proud of her parenting skills. She and her husband Kwaku raised five sons during hectic careers, and four of the five are still in college. One son, Jarim, has recently joined her in her company to head up SlapMedia Urban Marketing, a new division of House of the Rising Sons PR. A native of New Jersey with roots in Virginia and California, both the Person and Lynn families are quite large and far afoot.
A lover of travel to exotic lands, Isidra has studied in South America, Africa, and Hawaii, and hopes to study how to perfect her craft(s) in new destinations. She has already served as assistant director of three “off-off” Broadway plays, and news writer on a community cable news program. She has aspirations of being a part of at least one movie, because “they tend to have longer lasting power than radio and TV” and hopes to pen her first published book--as soon as she determines which topic she wants to tackle first. She has already completed three yet to be published books--one on a subject of a series of articles she wrote which led to a million dollar race discrimination lawsuit against L.A. County, another humorous look at her 9 year tenure in radio and a children's book that deals with the perils of babysitting as a young person.
Having recently completed teaching a course in Business Writing at West L.A. College, Isidra plans to make teaching an ongoing part of her life.
Teased for her gadget-loving nature, Isidra can rarely be found without a cell phone, Pocket PC, digital camera and video camera. She prides herself with being up on the latest software for all of these items, and is proficient on MS Word, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design. Find out more at www.IsidraGadget.com.
"I like people and I like things that help me work faster for those people," said Isidra of her penchant for the latest device to come down the pike. “ I am a multi-faxing, group emailing, online enthusiast if it will help to get the word out to people that something wonderful is going on," she said.

VIDEORIES
Video Production
Under the stewardship of veteran journalist Isidra Person-Lynn, the PR Person has announced the addition of a new focus: Videories. These well produced video stories can be of any length and will tell your story in a way a 30 second commercial cannot.
”After eight years of working with the Los Angeles Black Business Expo, Watts Health and UHP Healthcare, we have hired many video crews to document major public events. I have learned much about what it takes to get the client’s message across to their market,” said Isidra.
Our goal is to make available to your company a marketing strategy with tactical options that will build your business while making the most efficient use of your budget.
Working with a business ethic that is both conscientious and conscious, let the PR Person's Videories develop for your company long-term objectives as well as short term, easy to measure, points of progress.
